49ers draft bust Reuben Foster’s career in limbo again after Washington tenure
Don’t expect the 49ers to be up for a reunion, not after how things dissolved between them.
Foster hasn’t played a snap since the 49ers released him in November 2018, following his arrest for allegedly assaulting an ex-girlfriend at the team hotel the night before their game against the Buccaneers in Tampa, Fla.
Washington promptly claimed Foster off waivers but he never suited up for them. He tore multiple knee ligaments and reportedly sustained nerve damage in their first 2019 offseason workout. Those issues kept him on injured reserve through last season.
Peter King defends his Cousins-to-49ers 3-team trade proposal
NBC Sports' Peter King took a lot of heat for his proposal of a three-team trade between the San Francisco 49ers, Houston Texans, and Minnesota Vikings. The writer had Deshaun Watson ending up with the Vikings, Jimmy Garoppolo with the Texans, and Kirk Cousins with the 49ers.
It's that last part that drew ire from fans. It wasn't just because of Cousins ending up in San Francisco, a rumored scenario that seems to pop up every offseason, but what the 49ers give up in the trade. King has the Niners surrendering not just Garoppolo in the deal but also the No. 12 overall pick. That sounds like too much for what doesn't, on the surface, seem like an upgrade.
Bengals likely to host 17th regular-season game vs. 49ers
NBC Sports' Peter King offered some scheduling insight into what will likely be a 17-game season in 2021. The NFL continues negotiations with broadcast partners on a new television deal, and the networks and league are working on the assumption that the regular season will increase by one game.
Until now, there has been speculation on where those 17th games will take place. We already knew that each NFC West team would be matched up against the AFC North opponent with the same spot in its standings from this past season. That means the San Francisco 49ers taking on the last-place Cincinnati Bengals in 2021.
Per @peter_king, the AFC probably will host all the extra (17th) games in 2021. So the 49ers-Bengals game would be in Cincinnati. https://t.co/DEWsGo7K8t

King is hearing that the AFC will be hosting all 16 of the extra matchups in 2021 and then switching between conferences from there.
Golden Nuggets: Would you be upset if the 49ers went defensive back in the first round?
In today’s nuggets, you’ll see the 49ers taking a defensive back in a mock draft, another Pats writer talking about Jimmy G, potential backup QB options, whether Skule could start at left tackle, and which member of the secondary the team should prioritize.
Doug Farrar expanded on Moehrig’s skill set in the TD Wire mock:
Moehrig spent equal time in the box, in the slot, and at free safety last season in TCU’s split-field coverage, and he was an eraser wherever he lined up. In three seasons with the Horned Frogs, Moehrig allowed 49 catches on 96 targets for 533 yards, 253 yards after the catch, five touchdowns, seven interceptions, and an opponent passer rating of 54.7.
'Pretty unusual': Why a left tackle such as 49ers' Trent Williams going on the open market is rare
SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- In an offseason full of uncertainty for the San Francisco 49ers, one thing that's known for sure is that their top priority is retaining star left tackle Trent Williams.
The Niners want Williams. And Williams, who is set to become an unrestricted free agent on March 17, has made it clear he'd like to stay. Seems easy enough, right?
As is often the case when it comes to matters of multimillions, it's not so simple. With a chance to see just how much he could garner on the open market for the first time in his career, Williams is likely to test the waters.
Justin Skule Could be the 49ers Starter at Left Tackle in 2021
Trent Williams could leave the 49ers in a few weeks from now.
In fact, I'd say there is a high likelihood that he is as good as gone. That will leave the 49ers with yet another position of need. Worst part of all is that they will be desperate at left tackle for a second-consecutive offseason. The 49ers could always look to draft a player as Williams' replacement, but there are other areas they might want to reserve their draft capital for.
That is why Justin Skule could be the 49ers starter at left tackle in 2021.
Justin Skule
Justin Grant Skule (born November 23, 1996) is an American football offensive tackle for the San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Vanderbilt.
Couldn’t have gotten a better man for the job! Texas got a great one! https://t.co/zZKUJFoKof
— Justin Skule (@JSkule_58) January 29, 2021
Skule was a two-year starting left tackle for Centreville High School. Skule played in two state championships winning one in 2013. As a three-star lineman, Skule committed to Vanderbilt. He also received offers from Navy, West Virginia, Rutgers, and Virginia.
2 DB prospects to keep an eye on as 49ers rebuild secondary
The 49ers’ secondary will be a key focus this offseason through free agency and the draft. The latter of those two could wind up either making or breaking their 2021 campaign depending on how free agency shakes out. It seems as though the team is preparing to take at least one defensive back relatively early in this year’s draft considering two of the prospects they’ve had virtual meetings with.
Greg Newsome, Asante Samuel Jr,, Rondale Moore, Alim McNeill, Trill Williams, KJ Britt, Daelin Hayes. Are the ones I like.

They also talked with Jermar Jefferson, Thomas Graham, and Javian Hawkins
Min: Met with Joshuah Bledsoe, and Book that's all I have seen on them.
Northwestern CB Greg Newsome and Syracuse DB Trill Williams both met via video with San Francisco according to Draft Wire’s Justin Melo and could both be selected relatively early.
If Jimmy Garoppolo Were a Car, What Kind Would He Be?
The great Matt Maiocco got me thinking about quarterbacks and cars.
On Twitter, Maiocco compared 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to "a sports car with no spare tire" when explaining why the 49ers might want to invest in a better backup quarterback.
I’d say not having a reliable backup is more like having a high-performance sports car with no spare tire or replacement parts. A solid backup is a guard against the season spiraling completely out of control if the starter has to go into the garage for a while. https://t.co/TjTHUjnqCX
— Matt Maiocco (@MaioccoNBCS) February 28, 2021
I love Maiocco's analogy, so I'd like to use it, too. Thanks for the idea, Matty.
I agree with his general point -- Garoppolo is an expensive quarterback who breaks down, so the backup is important.
49ers throwback: When San Francisco hit home runs with draft day trades
The San Francisco 49ers hold the No. 12 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. John Lynch has made trades involving the team’s first-round pick in two of the four drafts he has overseen as general manager.
The Niners traded both up and down the draft board in the first round last year. San Francisco traded back one spot and selected defensive Javon Kinlaw 14th and then traded up from No. 31 to take receiver Brandon Aiyuk 25th.
In 2017, Lynch’s first draft at the helm, the 49ers traded down one spot and took defensive lineman Solomon Thomas No. 3. Lynch then traded up late in the first round to take linebacker Reuben Forster.
WATCH: John Lynch's hard-hitting, Hall of Fame highlight reel
There are a handful of players in NFL history that no offensive player wanted to meet at full speed, and former Tampa Bay Buccaneers safety John Lynch is certainly on that list.
Lynch, who just became the fourth player in Bucs history to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, was one of the hardest-hitting defenders of his generation.
