Bloody Sunday's impact and legacy on the Lions' Trey Flowers, his family and team

Trey Flowers sat in a Zoom town hall last summer, in the middle of a session about voting rights and voter registration, when the Detroit Lions defensive end began to speak. One of three NFL players on the call, he knew he wanted to share the story he heard tens of times growing up in Alabama.

Now, as part of a group put together by the Ross Initiative in Sports for Equality (RISE), he was going to tell the rest of the world.

Fifty-six years ago Sunday, Trey's uncle, Johnnie Flowers, marched across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma. So did his maternal grandmother, Delores Carter, who was pregnant at the time.

Carson Palmer

Palmer turned 38 last week. "Over the years, I’ve had teammates who decided to hang it up and I would ask them how they knew when it was time to walk away," Palmer said in a statement. "The answer was almost always the same: You just know. For me that time is now. Why? Quite simply, I just know." It ends a long, strange trip of a career. 

The 2002 Heisman Trophy winner at USC, Palmer was the No. 1 overall pick of the 2003 draft, but spent the entire year behind Jon Kitna on the bench. Palmer's career rapidly progressed after that before a devastating knee injury in the 2005-06 postseason. Palmer was never quite the same, though he was a second-team All-Pro for the Cardinals in 2015.

Jonathan Martin posts gun picture, bullying revenge message, leads to closing of high school

The high school attended by former Dolphins offensive lineman Jonathan Martin closed today because of a social media post from Martin that seemed to hint at school shootings as a source of revenge for bullying.

Martin, who has said he was subjected to bullying both in high school and by teammates in the NFL, posted an image of a shotgun and shells on his protected, private Instagram account, according to the New York Post.

The post included the words, “When you’re a bully victim & a coward, your options are suicide, or revenge.”
