Washington Football Team releases quarterback Alex Smith

Quarterback Alex Smith, who won the 2020 NFL Comeback Player of the Year award in helping the Washington Football Team win the NFC East title, has been released by the franchise, it was announced Friday.

Washington coach Ron Rivera said in a statement that the team granted Smith's request to be released after the two met this week.

"I had a chance to meet with Alex Smith this week and we had a very honest and real discussion," Rivera said in the statement released by the team. "We had the chance to reflect on the 2020 season and talk about moving forward into next year. After the conclusion of that meeting we decided that it would be best for both parties to move on and we will be granting Alex his request to be released.

The Washington Football Team is a professional American football team based in the Washington metropolitan area. Formerly known as the Washington Redskins, the team competes in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the NFC East division. The team plays its home games at FedExField in Landover, Maryland, with its headquarters and training facility located in Ashburn, Virginia. The team has played more than 1,000 games and is one of only five in the NFL to record over 600 total wins. It was the first NFL franchise with an official marching band and a fight song, "Hail to the Redskins".

The team was founded in 1932 as the Boston Braves before changing its name to the Redskins the following year. The franchise then relocated to Washington, D.C. in 1937, where they have been based since. Washington won the 1937 and 1942 NFL championship games as well as Super Bowls XVII, XXII, and XXVI. Washington has finished a season as league runner-up six times, losing the 1936, 1940, 1943, and 1945 title games and Super Bowls VII and XVIII. With 14 division titles and 24 postseason appearances, they have an overall postseason record of 23–18.

The Washington Football Team is walking into free agency with 40-million in cap space and in a comfortable position thanks to their superior defense and a young core group of players. It is evident to the average viewer that there is still an abundance of holes after going 7-9 in a lame-duck division.

Some of those needs include a third edge rusher, quarterback, wide receiver, running back, linebacker, and safety. Of course, that isn’t in any particular order, as the quarterback position needs to be targeted with an energetic approach.

NFL World Reacts To The Alex Smith Decision News

Despite making an incredible comeback with the Washington Football Team and doing the heavy lifting for them en route to winning the NFC East title, Alex Smith will not be returning to the team in 2021.

NFL insiders Ian Rapoport and Kim Jones reported this morning that the team will be parting ways with Smith “in the coming days.” But the 36-year-old signal caller is reportedly determined to continue playing.

In 2020, Alex Smith returned in Week 5 after missing the previous 1.5 years of football with a life-threatening leg injury. He went 5-1 as a starter and completed 66.7-percent of his passes with 1,582 yards and six touchdown passes. Smith would win Comeback Player of the Year for his efforts.

Alex Smith's incredible comeback proved to be his last hurrah in the nation's capital.

Washington is expected to part ways with the veteran quarterback in the coming days, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport and NFL Network's Kim Jones reported Monday, per informed sources.

Smith suffered a gruesome leg injury in 2018 and underwent 17 operations to initially repair and later save his leg from amputation, missing all of 2019 before overcoming all realistic expectations to make his return in 2020.

When Washington Football Team quarterback Alex Smith went public last week with how the franchise did not seem to support him in his miraculous return from a serious leg injury, it appeared to signal the end of his time in Washington. According to a new report, that breakup will come sooner rather than later.

On Monday morning, Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reported that Washington is expected to part ways with Smith in the coming days. The report was confirmed by CBS Sports NFL Insider Jonathan Jones. Releasing Smith will reportedly save nearly $15 million.

While Washington hasn't had consistency at the quarterback position since the Kirk Cousins days, Smith was without a doubt the best option they have had over the past three years.
