Washington Football Team: 3 cap casualties who flip 2021 NFL Draft plans

The Washington Football Team is walking into free agency with 40-million in cap space and in a comfortable position thanks to their superior defense and a young core group of players. It is evident to the average viewer that there is still an abundance of holes after going 7-9 in a lame-duck division.

Some of those needs include a third edge rusher, quarterback, wide receiver, running back, linebacker, and safety. Of course, that isn’t in any particular order, as the quarterback position needs to be targeted with an energetic approach.

Carson Palmer

Palmer turned 38 last week. "Over the years, I’ve had teammates who decided to hang it up and I would ask them how they knew when it was time to walk away," Palmer said in a statement. "The answer was almost always the same: You just know. For me that time is now. Why? Quite simply, I just know." It ends a long, strange trip of a career.

The 2002 Heisman Trophy winner at USC, Palmer was the No. 1 overall pick of the 2003 draft, but spent the entire year behind Jon Kitna on the bench. Palmer's career rapidly progressed after that before a devastating knee injury in the 2005-06 postseason. Palmer was never quite the same, though he was a second-team All-Pro for the Cardinals in 2015.

The high school attended by former Dolphins offensive lineman Jonathan Martin closed today because of a social media post from Martin that seemed to hint at school shootings as a source of revenge for bullying.

The post included the words, “When you’re a bully victim & a coward, your options are suicide, or revenge.”

The Idiot's Guide To The NFL Draft

The 2012 NFL Draft begins tonight. Who will the Niners and Raiders pick? We have no idea! But for the casual football fan who has not been following every Mel Kiper mock draft and Mike Mayock big board, we have assembled a cornucopia of relevant hyperlinks:

You can find Mike Tanier of Yahoo’s two-part breakdown of the first round here and here. Tanier opines that the 49ers will take Stanford offensive tackle Jonathan Martin with the 30th pick and doesn’t have an opinion about the Raiders’ first-round pick because they traded it to Cincinatti for Carson Palmer

Mike Mayock says Raiders asked too much of failed draft pick Lynn Bowden Jr.

In 2020, the Raiders planned to go to the playoffs. Instead, it was a season full of lessons.

That includes learning how to run a franchise during a pandemic, as every NFL team had to do — and still has to do — as COVID-19 hopefully continues to dissipate and vaccinations take hold.

On Wednesday, Raiders general manager Mike Mayock expressed some regret about his draft philosophy in 2020, when the pandemic first started to grip society. He mentioned to reporters the overall frustration of last year and how he’s better prepared this time around.

2020 NFL full season punting review

You would think that Denver should be a haven for punters. Playing half of your games at roughly one mile above sea level, should make it easier to do you job. Right? Generally you should be able to get more distance on your punts at elevation than at sea level.

Unfortunately for the Denver Broncos, this does not appear to be the case. Bronco punters have fared poorly over the past decade both in Denver and on the road while opposing punters seem to thrive at elevation.

Report: Broncos met virtually with Tulsa linebacker Zaven Collins

According to reports, the Denver Broncos are among the teams that have or will in the future meet virtually with Tulsa linebacker Zaven Collins. He’s a talented linebacker prospect who can do it all and is currently projected to be a first-round selection in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Collins is a 6-4, 260-pound linebacker who played his college ball at Tulsa. While there, Collins was asked to stop the run, rush the passer, and drop into coverage. Something he did very well and this versatility should intrigue all interested teams during the draft process.

Broncos 'like the trek' Drew Lock is undertaking as he aims to prove he's Denver's guy in 2021

Drew Lock is going to get another season to prove he's the future at quarterback for the Broncos, it seems.

There are a few good reasons for Lock's additional audition year: His team's new general manager hasn't seen him do it live, yet.

"I haven't seen Drew live on the field. I've just seen the tape," Broncos GM George Paton said Thursday, via team transcript. "There is so much that goes into that when evaluating a quarterback.

Tom Telesco Previews Bolts' 2021 Offseason

Though the 2021 Scouting Combine isn't taking place in Indianapolis as we normally know it, Chargers General Manager Tom Telesco held his annual presser in a virtual format that's becoming more normal as we move through this pandemic.

But as for change? Well, it can be a good thing according to Telesco who discussed how the lack of a typical combine this year has affected this part of the offseason.

This has been a topic for the second offseason in a row. Henry was franchised tagged last season. He was able to make 60 catches for 613 yards and scored four touchdowns while playing in 14 games.

Los Angeles Chargers GM suggests that a Mike Williams trade could be in the cards

Indeed, Mike Williams has played at a high level when he’s been healthy. He recorded 49 receptions for 1,001 yards while leading the NFL by averaging 20.4 yards per catch back in 2019. Williams, 26, fell back down to earth this past season — registering 48 receptions for 756 yards.

The larger issue for the Los Angeles Chargers is Williams’ $15.68 million cap hit for the 2021 season after the team picked up the fifth-year option on the receiver’s rookie deal.

NFL: New York Jets release DE Henry Anderson

The New York Jets released veteran Henry Anderson this week. The defensive end had started 24 games for the Jets since signing on three seasons ago from the Indianapolis Colts.Though he may not have been a regular starter in New York, Anderson was a key figure in the Jets' defensive-line rotation. In 2019 and 2020, he played more snaps (942) than every Jets lineman except should-have-been-Pro Bowler, Quinnen Williams. However, the Jets were stacked with talent across the OL. With Anderson having a lucrative contract, the Jets' hierarchy clearly felt this was the right time to part ways with the Stanford University graduate.

NFL Scouting Combine: What Is the Wonderlic Test?

The Wonderlic Test is one of the tools used during the annual NFL Scouting Combine to aid NFL scouts in rating potential draft picks. While other facets of the combine are much more physically grueling, the Wonderlic Test is considered somewhat of an "intelligence exam" in the NFL.

The Wonderlic Personality Test was created in 1936 by Eldon F. Wonderlic, as a short-form exam to measure certain functions of a subject's thought patterns. Now known as the Wonderlic Contemporary Cognitive Ability Test, it was originally developed to rate cognitive ability and problem-solving aptitude in common areas like vocabulary, math, and reasoning.

Wild NFL rule change could be coming to overtime games if owners vote through Ravens' proposal, per report

According to Pro Football Talk, the Ravens have proposed a rule that is based around a "spot-and-choose" concept. Under this rule, which would add some serious spice to overtime, one team would choose the yard line where the overtime drive starts and the other team would choose whether they want to play offense or defense.

The Houston Texans are still standing firm on not trading a wildly disgruntled Deshaun Watson, at least for now, but they made other news by releasing future Hall of Fame pass rusher J.J. Watt, who quickly and unexpectedly found a new home with the Arizona Cardinals.

From Matthew Stafford to Trevor Lawrence? Detroit Lions trade cost

The Detroit Lions are in a transition and many fans do not feel that Jared Goff is the answer. We know that many fans would love to see a franchise quarterback like Trevor Lawrence come to the Motor City after moving on from Matthew Stafford

What trade offer could Detroit Lions general manager Brad Holmes make that would entice the Jacksonville Jaguars, owners of the top pick in the 2021 NFL Draft?

You have to admit, Detroit Lions fans, that going from Matthew Stafford to Trevor Lawrence would have to feel somewhat like when the Indianapolis Colts went from Peyton Manning to Andrew Luck.

Chiefs tackles Eric Fisher, Mitch Schwartz may be ready for Week 1

Well, this was not something we were expecting. Kansas City Chiefs tackles Eric Fisher and Mitch Schwartz may be ready to participate in training camp, according to Chiefs general manager Brett Veach, who spoke to the media via Zoom on Monday morning.

Fisher tore his Achilles during the AFC title game, and Schwartz had back issues throughout the 2020 season.

“Mitch just recently had his disc worked on,” said Veach. “We’re hopeful for him to return at training camp, and the same thing with Fish... We’re hopeful both guys will complete the rehab and be available for training camp and to start the 2021 season.

Watt reportedly agreed to a two-year deal worth $31 million, with $23 million guaranteed. He will reunite with former Houston Texans teammate DeAndre Hopkins, who was traded to Arizona last offseason, and Watt will once again work with Cardinals defensive coordinator Vance Joseph, who coached him in Houston.

Bargain Bin Free Agency Can Make a Difference

Looming free agency seemed a likely reason for the loss of Bears defensive depth, if not one starter.

Defensive ends Kevin Pierre-Louis and Brent Urban, nose tackle John Jenkins and starting safety Tashaun Gipson all are heading into free agency for a team already hurt last year by erosion of depth.

If Pro Football Focus is at all accurate in cash assessments like it claims to be with metrics of varying sorts, then the Bears need not worry about losing defensive depth.

The first of several Bears moves regarding the salary cap was one reported Monday by ESPN's Adam Schefter as Skrine is being released.

Chalk Talk: How will COVID-19 change draft prep?

It was reported by multiple media outlets in late January that, because of COVID-19 concerns, the NFL will prohibit prospects from visiting team facilities or meeting with teams at other locations. That includes private workouts, dinners, interviews, film sessions and medical exams. Teams can only have in-person contact with prospects at their respective on-campus Pro Days, with teams limited to three members of their organization in attendance. As was the case after everything shut down last March, the majority of contact between teams and prospects likely will occur via telephone and video conferencing.

Kiper sees 2021 draft as historic one for QBs

In his latest mock draft, ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr. is predicting that five quarterbacks will be selected among the first nine picks.

Kiper thinks it's highly unlikely that any of the five will still be on the board when the Bears go on the clock at No. 20.

"I would be very surprised if one dropped to 20," Kiper said Monday during a 90-minute call with the national media.

Bears add former Texas HC Tom Herman to coaching staff

Tom Herman has cracked the NFL coaching ranks with a unique title.

The former University of Texas and University of Houston head coach has joined the Bears as an offensive analyst and special projects assistant, the team announced on Monday.

The latter portion of Herman's title makes his hiring an interesting one. "Special projects" tends to be an adjective used for a manager's title in an office building, not an NFL club's headquarters on its coaching staff, but considering how the Bears' offense fared for most of 2020, they could use a special project or two.

Individual and collective recognition

There are plenty of numbers available for reference that accurately depict the impact of the Steelers' defense on the team and on the NFL in 2020.

The number 2 is as appropriate as any.

Outside linebacker T.J. Watt and free safety Minkah Fitzpatrick were both named First-Team All-Pro by the Associated Press.

Steelers reportedly have meeting with dynamic Auburn wide receiver

Steelers’ JuJu Smith-Schuster leaves curious IG comment for teammate ahead of free agency

The Pittsburgh Steelers have a lot of questions to figure out as free agency approaches. Perhaps the biggest question, besides Ben Roethlisberger, is that of wide receiver Juju Smith-Schuster.

Zach Banner, a former offensive lineman for the Steelers, posted on Instagram about a new contract. However, JuJu Smith-Schuster’s comment is a bit of a strange one and might be a sign of what’s going to happen in the Steel City.

2021 NFL Mock Draft: Eagles roll dice on QB in Round 1, Dolphins target receiver at No. 3

This draft, like every other draft, is about the quarterbacks. Specifically: Which QB-needy team will move up -- and how far -- to get the player they've convinced themselves will be the face of the franchise for the next dozen years. Trevor Lawrence is going to Jacksonville -- that has felt like a done deal for months -- but things immediately get interesting after that.

In this week's mock draft, we have the Jets, Falcons, Eagles and Lions selecting quarterbacks, which means five QBs are off the board in the first eight selections. Meanwhile, five wide receivers hear their names called while seven edge rushers find themselves among the first 32 picks.

That doesn’t give the Rams’ front office enough draft capital to really remake their roster. The good news is that Los Angeles doesn’t need to overhaul the group that won 10 games last year.

What will be the next domino to fall?

My guess is it won't be too long until Dak Prescott and Jameis Winston are retained by the Dallas Cowboys and New Orleans Saints, respectively. Prescott, who's recovering from an injury that sidelined him for most of last season, could be in line to receive the franchise tag for the second straight year before getting signed to a long-term deal -- and Jerry Jones has publicly voiced support for the idea of locking up Prescott. Winston, on the other hand, could seamlessly step into Sean Payton's offense if Drew Brees decides to retire.

NFL World Reacts To The Alex Smith Decision News

Drama in Seattle should be enjoyed by Arizona Cardinals fans

While there have been more road victories for the red birds, not being able to get it done at home has cost them dearly.

The tie in 2016 at home was about the most infuriating game to watch as it ended in a 6-6 tie that is still embarrassing to this day. in 2017, it was the absolutely stupid-playmaking ability of Wilson to connect with an open receiver on a 3rd and 21 after scrambling for what seemed like forever.

Peter King defends his Cousins-to-49ers 3-team trade proposal

It wasn't just because of Cousins ending up in San Francisco, a rumored scenario that seems to pop up every offseason, but what the 49ers give up in the trade. King has the Niners surrendering not just Garoppolo in the deal but also the No. 12 overall pick. That sounds like too much for what doesn't, on the surface, seem like an upgrade.

Jacksonville Jaguars Name Dan Edwards to New SVP Position
